Stocktaking for Rio+20: SD Councils at national and subnational level

Sustainable Development Councils (SDCs) have been established as multi-stakeholder formations across the globe since the proposal for such bodies appeared in the Rio 1992 conference. At the core, their purpose is to improve the involvement of organised civil society, and with that also improve the knowledge base in policy-making processes. The article captures the diffusion of such bodies, providing analysis of different models regarding tasks and function, as well as good practice examples and some insights on failures and challenges.
