2010-2011: Marine Environmental Governance: towards the sustainable use of EU Seas

Work plan, outcomes and activities 2011:
The WG plans to prepare a WG Statement on "Marine Environmental Governance: towards the sustainable use of EU Seas". It will focus on the challenge of integrating Marine Spatial Planning, ICZM, Marine Conservation and Fisheries Policy in the context of the EU Maritime Policy, aiming to pursue a policy of sustainable use of the seas.

2009-2010

Outcomes 2010:
On 14 October, the WG met in Bruges, finalising the topics of 2010 and presenting the work plan for 2011.
On 12 March, the WG Marine held a kick-off meeting initiated by CNADS in Lisbon. For this meeting the WG chairs already prepared two papers:

one paper deals with sustainable land use in coastal zones, which serves as a contribution to the Annual Statement 2010;
- the other one deals with the EU Marine Protected Areas and trans-boundary cooperation Network.
2008-2009: Blue Book on an Integrated Maritime Policy in the EU

Main outcome 2008
The WG assessed how their input to the Green Paper on a Future Maritime Policy for the European Union was embodied in the "Blue Book" on an Integrated Maritime Policy in the European Union.
- On 5 May: The WG Marine met in May in Lisbon, kindly hosted by the CNADS. The meeting set the WG's main strategic lines of action for selected marine policy processes, such as the implementation of the Marine Strategy Directive. The WG Marine analysed the latest developments in the EU Maritime Policy. The WG also assessed the potential consequences of the newly created DG MARE. The WG decided to look into the correlation between the Marine Strategy and the Water Framework Directives.
- On 19 May: a WG representative attended a stakeholder meeting on the EU Marine Strategy.
- The WG met in Bordeaux in October 2008 and has since then been considering a solution for chair and a work plan.
